The killing of senior inspector Vilas Joshi by assistant sub-inspector Dilip Shirke inside Vakola police station on Saturday was not a spur-of-the-moment incident, if the statement of 30-year-old wireless operator Balasaheb Aher is anything to go by. Fifteen minutes before he opened fire on Joshi, Shirke had stormed out of his senior's cabin, reads Aher's statement.

The police said Shirke had been assigned night duty on May 1, but he didn't turn up. He was then marked as absent in the station diary. The cop was furious when he learnt about it.

Aher has told the police that Shirke walked into to Joshi's cabin around 8.30 pm and probably got into an argument. "Shirke came out of the cabin in a few minutes. Around 8.40 pm, Shirke again went to Joshi's cabin. Just about 8.42 pm, as Joshi left his cabin to leave for home, Shirke followed him and fired three rounds on Joshi," said Aher in his statement.

One of the stray bullets went on to hit Aher, who was standing near a police vehicle opposite Joshi's cabin. "In a fraction of seconds, Shirke then went back to Joshi's cabin and shot himself," Aher told police.
