Criticising the state government for being unaffected by the Maratha community's outcry, Congress state unit President Ashok Chavan said on Tuesday that time has come for the state to address the issues of Maratha reservation and misuse of Atrocities Act.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, the Nariman Point headquarter of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Chavan said silent marches with lakhs of participants protesting without any slogans or placards were being taken out in various cities. He said these rallies were nothing but the outcry of the Maratha community against the state's delay in addressing their issues.

Stating that the rape and murder of a minor in Kopardi of Ahmednagar district triggered the silent agitation, Chavan said stringent action against the accused was one of the main demands. He said the community didn't want abolition of the Atrocities Act, but prevention of its misuse. He said the state should immediately take cognisance of these silent marches.

Other than that, unemployment, farmers' loan problem and disillusionment with the present government in the last two years has resulted in Maratha community's outcry, Chavan said.

Pointing out that the previous Congress-NCP Democratic Front Government had provided reservation benefits to Marathas and Muslims, Chavan said the present BJP-led state government did not plead the case in the court effectively, leading to a loss of reservation benefits for the Maratha community. He said there was anger among the Maratha youth, which was being expressed through silent marches.
