It was a mystery Monday for the residents of Vikramgadh, a town around 50km from Mumbai.

After being awoken by a sound "louder than thunder" on Sunday night, they were shocked to find a cylindrical hole 30-foot-deep in the field belonging to a resident. While a majority "god-fearing" residents have already attributed the suspicious goings-on to an alien attack, there are some who believe it could have been because of a meteor fall.

The hole in the field of Tulsi Kothe, a resident of Pachalkar pada, was measured after residents informed the authorities. The tehsildar and others from his office rushed to the site on being told about the incident, and the former verified the depth using a dip stick. He has prepared a report and submitted it to the collector.

Confirming the mysterious hole, tehsildar SY Sonawne said, "We have submitted the report to the collector's office. We suspect it happened due to heavy rains and have asked the villagers not to panic as nothing suspicious has been found."

Residents, however, are not convinced and have their own theories and misgivings.

On Monday, Kothe said there was a loud blast in the field late on Sunday. She and other residents came out of their houses to find out the source and cause of the noise but went back due to the darkness. They saw the hole the next morning and informed the local police and state authorities.

"I and some others suspect that aliens attacked the field, but others say that it was Lord Indra who made his presence felt by his vajra. Whatever it might be, we are all worried..." said Kothe.

Another resident, Vassu Dhande, said, "Such an incident has never taken place in our village. It's either an act of God or aliens from another planet came here."

Palghar collector Abhijeet Bangar admitted to the mysterious nature of the incident and said, "The hole definitely is peculiar. Our officials had gone to the spot to study the field but couldn't conclude if it was formed due to a meteor fall or something else. It could not have been dug manually as it has a very particular shape."

"We have submitted our report to the government; experts need to study the spot to come out with a final conclusion," he added.

Historian Shridatta Raut, who has done extensive research on ancient forts and their excavation and conservation, said, "Such pits can often occur due to heavy rainfall. But, who knows, it could have been a space object as well, that crashed into the field, creating that hole! Proper research needs to be carried out on it."
