Nurses in KEM Hospital in Mumbai, who took care of Aruna Shanbaug while she was bedridden, had opposed to giving passive euthanasia to end her life. Three years after Shanbaug's death, the nurses still think that it was a not good decision to grant Shanbaug passive euthanasia, which they had opposed.

A retired nurse from KEM Hospital, who was one of Shanbaug's caretakers for 42 years, feels that life is precious and should end naturally, like it did for Aruna.

"Euthanasia should be considered only when the victim or his family come forward. In Aruna's case, her family or relatives did not turn up. Even she never expressed that she wanted to die. This is the reason we were against passive euthanasia for her. The nurses who took care of her never said that she was becoming a burden," said Anju Parade, 59, who was the general secretary of Nurses Welfare Association.

She also said, "Passive euthanasia should only be given when the health condition is incurable and the family does not have financial support."

Nutan Sawant, a nurse who is working in KEM for 30 years, said, "We took care of her 24X7. We wanted her to die naturally rather than taking away medical support. Everybody should get the medical attention they need."

According to the Dean of KEM Hospital, the Supreme Court verdict is historic. Saying that passive euthanasia is the demandof the society. Dr Avinash Supe, Dean of KEM, said, "The verdict is useful for the people who are at the end stage and do not want ventilator support. The verdict will help them in taking appropriate decision. 'Living will' of the patient will also help the family to follow the patient's will."

Dr Supe, however, expressed concern about misuse of the verdict. He said, "There should not be a misuse of passive euthanasia for treating a patient with the worst health condition or by their family to take away property."
