A 33-year old artisan has been arrested by the Pydhonie police for allegedly stealing ornaments and diamonds worth Rs30 lakh from a jewellery manufacturing workshop where he was employed. The accused was arrested from his native place in West Bengal.

The arrested person has been identified as Shekhar Sudarshan Bera, 33, a resident of Mulund and native of Howrah in West Bengal.

According to the police, complainant Kanailal Mal, 60, has a workshop at Abdul Rehman Street in Pydhonie. At the said workshop, Bera has been working since the past six months. He takes orders from clients and prepares ornaments at the workshop as per their requirements.

"On October 11, around 7 pm, Mal took the ornaments prepared by the workers, kept them in a safe at the workshop and left for home. Bera was at the workshop at the time. Since the following day was a Sunday, the workshop remained closed. On October 13, when Mal returned to the workshop, he realised that the ornaments and diamonds were missing from the safe. That day, Bera had not showed up for work," said an officer from Pydhonie police station.

Mal called Bera on his mobile phone, but the phone remained switched off. Bera did not return home till October 22, after which Mal registered a complaint against him at Pydhonie police station.

"On receipt of specific information that Bera was hiding at his native place in West Bengal, a police team reached there on October 23. Bera was apprehended from his in-law's place at Krishnagunj in Nadia district. We are questioning Bera to ascertain where the stolen property has been kept," the officer said.
