Deafening salvos of shots fired from a range of artillery guns — from 120mm Mortar gun to the self-propelled 155mm Howitzer–Bofors and the rockets from the Grad BM 21 — hit the targets precisely giving a glimpse of the preparedness of the artillery during any warlike situation.

The School of Artillery in Deolali, Nashik held Exercise Sarvatra Prahar at the firing ranges on Monday to demonstrate the prowess, deadly fire power, precision and might of the guns.

The demonstration of the firepower of the artillery guns was conducted by the School of Artillery for the officers of the Defence Service Staff College (DSSC), Wellington and cadets of National Defence Academy (NDA). It was presided by Lt General John George, Commandant of School of Artillery.

Depicting a war zone, the show began with deployment of gunners by army helicopter Chetak, and that of the 120mm Mortar gun by Cheetah helicopters, and firing of the mule-back loaded 120mm Mortar, the 105 mm Indian Field gun and the Light Field Gun which has a capacity of firing multiple rounds.

Modern rocket systems like the Pinaca, Smerch, model of Bramhos missile, communication and radar systems, surveillance and target acquisition equipment, unmanned aerial vehicles, surveillance sensors, weapon locating radars were also on display.

Portraying a demonstrative picture of a war, a Cheetah helicopter displayed its ability of Nape of the Earth flying — flying low, under the radar to gather information of the enemy positions. The tactical team of officers then planned the line of action and the position of the guns to target the enemy.

The planned attack was supported by a UAV to gauge direction of the artillery fire, firing of smoke screen to blind enemy vision, deployment of para troopers all of which provided a thrill to the demonstration that gave a vivid picture of a war.
