Mumbai crime branch on Monday took custody of Arshid Qureshi and Rizwan Khan in connection with the case, wherein youths from Kerala were allegedly converted and radicalised to join Daesh. The duo when produced before a local court on Monday have been remanded in police custody till September 1.

Qureshi was also linked with televangelist Dr Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF).

According to the police, on August 6, a Dongri-based man had lodged a complaint with Nagpada police accusing Qureshi, Khan, Abdul Rashid and Mohammad Haneef among others for instigating his son Ashfaque to join the radical outfit - IS, after which, Ashfaque left for abroad. Nagpada police had registered a case under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the Indian Penal Code for criminal conspiracy. The probe was later taken over by the Mumbai crime branch.

Haneef, who works as a cleric in a mosque was nabbed from Kambalakkad in Wayanad district in Kerala this month. It is alleged that Haneef was in touch with the suspects - Arshid Qureshi and Rizwan Khan, who were earlier arrested by Kerala police in an offence registered by them with regards to a similar case of forceful conversions and instigating youths to join the IS. Abdul Rashid is believed to have fled to Syria, police said.

"This looks like a module, wherein, few men were instrumental in converting youths and instigating them to join the IS. We will interrogate Qureshi and Khan to understand the functioning of the module and if more persons were associated with it. We would also investigate whether they were in touch with anyone from the Islamic State for recruiting youths from India," said a crime branch officer.
