A group of people on Sunday protested against the Metro III car shed project that is coming up at Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon (E). The protest saw the turnout of a large number of citizens forming a human chain around the site, requesting the government to move the project to another site.

Save Aarey Group, consisting of concerned citizens like morning walkers, neighbouring residents, naturalists and environmental activists, are upset with the callous attitude of the government regarding protecting one of the last remaining green lungs of Mumbai – Aarey Milk Colony.

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) prepared by MMRDA for the Line 3 Metro was studied by the group, who pointed out that it had serious drawbacks in observing and listing the ecological situation around the Metro Yard.

The group is aware that this will increase the time and financial requirements, but has asked the government to also put a monetary value to the various intangible benefits and services that Aarey Milk Colony provides, and the long term loss if the car shed is situated in Aarey.

Giving an example, the group members said that the proposed site in Aarey is right next to the Mithi river forming its catchment area. "If the car shed is constructed, then during monsoons the water retention ability of the plot will be lost due to concretization and hence, all the excess run off water will find its way in the Mithi, which will increase the risk of downstream flooding in Chakala and the international airport area," said one of the group members, adding that right lessons have not been learnt from the disastrous 2005 flood when 900 mm of rain fell within a span of 24 hours.

The group is seeking a meeting with the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss the matter further, and are upset that numerous attempts to reach him and petitions so far have not had any desired effect till now.
