A 35-year-old man died in custody of Versova police on Wednesday morning after complaining of stomach pain. According to the police, the deceased, Gotiram Shivekar, a resident of Andheri, was rushed to Cooper hospital but was declared dead before admission. The police has set up an independent inquiry to ascertain the exact cause of death.

"Shivekar was arrested on Tuesday evening from Andheri in a case of assault under section 324 of the Indian Penal Code. He complained of stomach pain at around 1am on Wednesday. He was rushed to Bhabha hospital and then to Cooper. However he collapsed on the way back to the police station and was rushed to Cooper again at around 8am. He was declared dead before admission," said Satyanarayan Choudhary, DCP of Zone 9.

On Tuesday evening, under the influence of alcohol, Shivekar allegedly assaulted two people in Versova. Based on a complaint by them, a case was registered and Shivekar arrested. Shivekar also complained against the duo and the police registered cross complains. He was a roadside dweller and was an alcoholic, said the police. His notoriety was well-known in the area.

Choudhary added that prima facie there was no suspected foul play in his death. However, as per protocol, since the accused died in police custody, the Crime Branch unit 11 will be conducting a probe into the matter and ascertain the exact cause of death. Further action will be taken based on the reports, said the police.

"The deceased victim was brought dead to the casualty early morning. He had old injuries on the back and the chest. He did not have any fresh injuries. The body has been sent for postmortem and any comment on how he died will only be determined after the autopsy," said the medical officer on duty at BMC-run Cooper hospital.
