The heavy firepower and deadly accuracy of the Indian artillery were showcased during 'Exercise Sarvatra Prahar' at the ranges of the School of Artillery in Deolali at Nashik on Tuesday.

The programme was witnessed by Lt General A K Mishra, AVSM, ADC, Commandant, School of Artillery, as well as a foreign defence delegation of Nepal led by Brigadier General Gaurav Tandel. The two-day demonstration, which took place on Monday and Tuesday, was conducted by the School of Artillery for the officers of the Defence Service Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, cadets of National Defence Academy (NDA), and officers of the College of Military Engineering (CME). Students from various schools in Nashik attended the exercise.

Simulating a war scenario, the show began with a Cheetah helicopter displaying its ability of 'nape of the earth' flying – which is flying low, under the radar, so as to gather information about the enemy positions. The tactical team of officers then planned the line of action and the positions of the guns so as to best target the enemy.

Then the full array of tactics was seen in action: the well-planned attack was supported by a drone to gauge the direction of the artillery fire, a smoke screen was created to blind enemy vision, paratroopers were deployed, gunners were deployed by army helicopter Chetak, 120 mm mortars were deployed by Cheetah helicopter, and the famous Bofors gun was directly and indirectly fired. Shakti – the artillery combat, command and control system was also seen in action.

Guns including the indigenous 120 mm mortars, 105 mm Indian field gun, 105 mm light field gun, 130 mm medium gun, 155 mm Soltam, to the sophisticated 155mm FH 77B Howitzer – Bofors, and Grad BM -21 Rocket Launcher, participated in the demonstration.

Modern rocket systems like the Pinaka, Smerch, model of Bramhos missile, communication and radar systems, surveillance and target acquisition equipment, unmanned aerial vehicles, surveillance sensors, and weapon locating radars were also on display.

Lt Gen A K Mishra appreciated the performance by the guns and gunners and passed on an "Excellent shooting" remark to the men in action. Speaking on the occasion, Lt Gen Mishra said guns have proved their might. "The success of every war will be decided by its fire power," he said.
