The Western Railway (WR) on Thursday said that the Indian Army has started preliminary works for the construction of a foot overbridge (FOB) at Elphinstone Road railway station connecting Parel. Jawans have started works like earmarking and soil testing.
According to WR, the actual construction work will start only after getting a nod from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). "We are still awaiting CRS clearance, and it is only after that the Army will start the actual work," said Ravindar Bhakar, Chief Public Relation Officer, WR.
"What we see today is just the preliminary works like soil testing and other activities that are to be conducted before starting the actual work," he added.
On September 29, at least 23 people were killed and over 30 others injured following a stampede on a foot overbridge (FOB) linking Elphinstone Road and Parel railway stations.
After the accident, the parliamentary panel had summoned top railway officials, and the WR conducted a detailed audit of all the stations in the Mumbai suburban section. The audit detected loopholes in the system and development works at each and every station was proposed.
However, in the last week of October, the Indian Army was roped in to build a foot overbridge at the Elphinstone Road station. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited the station and Fadnavis announced that the new FOB would be completed by January 31 next year.
