A four-day, folk art workshop is being organised in Bharti Vidyapeeth College of Architecture, Kharghar, in order to promote traditional art and help students learn such art forms directly from artisans.

The college is celebrating its 50th anniversary and the workshop has been organised as part of its golden jubilee celebration.

At the workshop, students will be taught Madhubani, Warli and Pattachitra paintings by six artisans who have been invited from Bihar, interiors of Maharashtra and West Bengal.

“Interior designing is as important as architecture. Traditional art forms can be used extensively in interior designing and this workshop will enable students to develop skills in that field. Fifty students have been selected for the workshop and they will be interacting with the artisans, gaining basic knowledge about each art form, the techniques used, selection of designs, giving sketches and appropriate use of colours,” said Ritu Deshmukh, vice-principal.

She added that students will also be painting the walls of the architecture college building with motifs pertaining to each art form after a demonstration from the artisans.

A third year architecture student, Sharvari Mate, said, “It is very interesting to work with the artisans and share their expertise. They taught us, for instance, how Pattachitra is a 2D form of art which uses vibrant colours and mainly depicts mythological sequences, village festivals and the like. In interior designing one can choose to create a feature wall that is full of such motifs as it is sure to give a beautiful, ethnic look.”

Somma Banarjjee, who runs Mitti, a folk art and handicraft boutique in Kharghar, arranged for the artisans to come and participate in the workshop as she deals with many of them in her venture.

The workshop started on Tuesday and will continue till Friday.
