Appoint special task force to probe Dalit killings: Governor to DGP

On Saturday, Maharashtra governor, Vidyasagar Rao has directed the director general of police (DGP) to create a special task force for probing the recent Dalit killings. The police have not been able to make any arrests on the case as of now.Three members of a Dalit family were killed on the night of October 20. Their mutilated bodies were later found in a village well and a member's head and limbs were missing.

The killing sparked a massive uproar in the state. The family belonged to Jawkhede Khalsa village in Pathardi Taluka in Ahmednagar district. It is being alleged that the killings were done by members of an upper caste.Members of the community refused to conduct the last rites as some parts of the boy were missing. "The governor spoke to the DGP over the telephone soon after meeting a delegation of RPI (A) leaders at Raj Bhavan, Mumbai," stated a press release from the governor's house.

The directives were given after members of the RPI (A) met the governor. The party is in alliance with the BJP and had sought CID inquiry into the incident.

Rao termed the incident "An act of gross cruelty and cannot be tolerated." He told the delegation that a compensation of Rs3.75 lakh had been disbursed to members of the deceased family early on Saturday," the release further stated.

A high level meeting to review all cases of atrocities against the Dalits in the state and effective implementation of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act will be taken as a follow up to the incident.

The case is the fourth such case of atrocity against Dalits in the Ahmednagar district. RPI (A) chief, Ramdas Athavale demanded that the entire area be declared an atrocity-prone district and that a compensation of Rs15 lakh to the family of the victims be provided.
