The State government has challenged the anticipatory bail granted to six trustees of the People Improvement Trust, who are charged under various penal sections for their alleged role in the demolition of the Ambedkar Bhavan trust in Dadar.

The government has also appointed senior counsel, Amit Desai to appear for the state and argue its stand in the High court. The government has challenged the anticipatory bail granted to accused Nagsen Sonare, Uttamrao Bodwade, Shrikant Gaware, R R Shinde, Vijay Ranpise, Abhay Bambole who are alleged of dacoity, unlawful assembly, robbery, theft and trespassing.

A sessions court had earlier granted them anticipatory bail by passing different orders. Advocate Santosh Sanzkar who appeared for the accused said "The sessions court clarified that this case is purely of civil nature. By challenging the anticipatory bail order, government wants to appease a certain section of the society. We will oppose the appeal in the High Court." The plea is likely to be heard next week.

The Bhoiwada police had registered the case against the accused based on the complaint registered by Anand Raj Ambedkar, grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Certain portion of the press was damaged while carrying out the demolition in June. The high court has asked both the parties to maintain status quo in the case.

The trustees had earlier moved the court after a call was given to the supporters of Prakash Ambedkar to do shramdan and enter the demolished property of the trust and restore it. The trustees argued that the demolition which took place in the wee hours of June 26 was in accordance with law. Moreover, a new structure, 17 storey building, will be built at the same location and BMC has already approved the plan for the same.
