High Power, a Marathi documentary film about people displaced while building the Tarapur Nuclear Power Project, bagged a Yellow Oscar in the Best Short Documentary Category at the Uranium Film Festival in Brazil.

The filmmakers are now looking for donors who can contribute to help dub the film in English and Hindi so that it reaches a wider audience.

The Uranium festival screened 52 documentaries and fiction films from 19 countries. “I dedicate this award to all the farmers and fishermen who lost their lands, homes and lives due to nuclear power plants across the world,” said mechanical engineer Pradeep Indulkar, who spearheaded this project.

Initially, Indulkar had no plans to make a film on the issue. However, the government’s attempt to paint a rosy picture on the lives of the villagers suffering from displacement and effects of radiation prompted him to take this step. “We thought we should show the truth and make a film that shows the ground reality,” explained Indulkar, who worked at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for 12 years as a scientific officer.

“The displaced people of Tarapur and its adjoining villages have so many issues. They have suffered cancer, paralysis, miscarriages, still birth, impotency, mental disorders, kidney problems due to radiation. And then there were other issues like loss of livelihood, jobs, infrastructure, improper rehabilitation and so on,” Indulkar said.

The film so far has been translated in seven languages for audiences at film festivals all over the world. The 27 minute documentary was dubbed by Marathi actor Vikram Gokhale. “Actor Tom Alter, who is also committed to the anti-nuclear cause, has offered to dub it in English. We need Rs88,000 to dub it in English and Hindi. It’s a socially produced film, most people who have worked on the film have done it without any charges. We’re hoping people chip in so we can show the film in schools and colleges,” he added.
