Just a month after the former Mumbai Police commissioner, Satyapal Singh, resigned and joined politics, another senior police officer from Maharashtra has quit the force. He too is likely to join politics.

Additional director general (ADG) of police PK Jain resigned from the Indian Police Service (IPS) on Friday night. The move has surprised many because Jain was scheduled to retire on February 28, which is just a week away.

"I am quitting the police force after putting in 33 years of service. I put in my papers on Friday night," said Jain when asked about his resignation.

According to sources, Jain is likely to enter politics and join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said: "I am keeping that option open. If something worthwhile comes up, I will explore it. I would like to do something in the public domain."

Asked why he had resigned just a week before his retirement, Jain said: "Since I have taken the decision, why should I waste the remaining seven days."

He added that he was not quitting in protest. "If I had to protest I would have quit long back. Quitting in protest a week before retirement is a sham. I wouldn't call that a protest," Jain said.

"However, there is no denying that several officers are upset with the way the government has been handling postings, promotions and transfers. Some officers are being given a red-carpet welcome while some are being dumped. These and several other issues are there," he added.

Confirming the news, additional chief secretary (ACS) (home) Amitabh Rajan said: "He (Jain) submitted his resignation on Friday. We are processing it."

Jain who was posted as ADG (special operations) belongs to the 1981-batch of IPS officers. He was also the secretary of the Maharashtra State IPS Officers' Association. He has served in several posts, including that of principal secretary (home), joint commissioner of police (administration), Mumbai, managing director of the Maharashtra State Security Corporation, and ADG (special operations).
