Another inmate dies over petty fight at Pune's Yerwada jail

The deceased was serving a three and half year jail term in a kidnapping case.

While the incident of Byculla jail inmate Manjula Shetye's custodial death is far from over, another inmate was killed at Pune's Yerwada jail on Saturday afternoon. The reason — he too was attacked by another inmate. The deceased was serving a three and half year jail term in a kidnapping case.

The deceased has been identified as Sukhdev Meghraj Mehkarkar, 43. Mehkarkar was convicted in a kidnapping and molestation case and was lodged in Yerwada jail from April this year. The other inmate who attacked him was identified as Dinesh Dabade, 35, who is locked up in Yerwada jail fand is serving life term in a murder case. Both Mehkarkar and Dabade were staying in the same barrack.

According to jail authorities, the incident took place near their barrack at around 12.30 on Saturday noon. UT Pawar, superintendent, Yerwada Central Jail said, "Mehkarkar and Dabade were staying in the same barrack in the jail and they both were working in the jail's kitchen."

An officer from Yerwada jail told DNA, "Nearly eight days back when they were in the kitchen, they had an argument after Mehkarkar accidentally spilled water on Dabade."

"On Saturday afternoon, after working in the kitchen, Mehkarkar was sitting outside his barrack where he was helping other inmates in writing letters to their family members. Before anyone could realise what was happening, Dabade approached Mehkarkar and hit his head with a stone," the officer added.

When jail authorities were alerted, they rushed to the barrack and spotted Mehkarkar's body lying in a pool of blood. The jail authorities alerted the Yerwada police station after which a team of policemen rushed to the jail.

After the incident, Dabade has been detained by the Yerwada police and further procedure of registering a case is underway at Yerwada police station.
