The Mumbai and Bengaluru police were put on high alert after they received an email informing them of a possible terror attack in both the cities on Monday.

The email said that terrorist may carry out chemical attacks in Mumbai and Bengaluru. A probe revealed that the information was a hoax and the said email was allegedly sent by a man with an unsound mind.

According to sources, an email was sent on Monday morning to both Mumbai and Bengaluru police departments informing them that terrorists might carry out chemical attacks. Once the police began their probe they learnt that the email was sent by a certain Dilip Das, a native of Bengaluru. The Bengaluru police apprehended him and the enquiry revealed that the alert was a hoax.

The police source said that this is not the first time that Das had sent such an email. He had earlier too carried out such notorious acts by sending hoax emails to the police. Since Das is of unsound mind, the police might not arrest him.

A senior police officer confirmed having received an email and said, "We had received the email and we took the neccessary precautionary measure. We do not take such kind of input lightly."

Last month, the Mumbai police had received an email informing them about possible hijack bids at Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai airports, that too turned out to be a hoax.

In connection to the case, Hyderabad police had arrested Vamshi Krishna, a local travel agent who had posed as a woman and had shot an email to the police after he could not fulfill his girlfriend's wish of taking her on a trip to Mumbai.
