Paver blocks are the ones to be blamed for the Andheri bridge collapse. This is one of the theories that have cropped up, even as a detailed report is expected by July 18.
These paver blocks were laid on the footpath along the road over bridge, which collapsed early Tuesday morning. To make matters worse, on Wednesday morning another road over bridge near Grant Road station was shut after cracks were found on it.
On Wednesday the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) Sushil Chandra along with other railway officers inspected the site. Sources said that the paver blocks masked the actual condition of the bridge. “The entire stretch of the footpath was covered with paver blocks. This put additional weight on the structure. During monsoon, water seeped inside it making the steel structure weak as it began corroding,” said a senior railway official.
The blocks were laid by the BMC during repair work few years ago. An annual audit conducted in November had given clearance to the bridge. Another theory is that multiple cables of various agencies added weight to the bridge.
