The heavily indebted BEST has estimated an increase of 49 crore in its deficit, taking its 2019-2020 budget deficit from Rs 720.53 crore to Rs 769.53 crore.

The BEST administration budgeted a token amount of Rs 1 crore as a provision for next Diwali’s bonus for its employees while it still has no clarity on when it will pay the bonus promised on the occasion of this year’s diwali.

While 48 crore was mentioned as an expense towards the nutrition tax which it had agreed to pay from this month after a break from 2010. The administration received a lot of flak from the BEST committee members on the third and the last day of its budget meeting for its budget proposal for the year 2019-2020. The budget “lacked touch with the ground reality” and was riddled with silly errors. Members across party lines criticised the administration for being insensitive to its employees and passengers in its current approach.

After a 10-hour-long meeting Surendrakumar Bagde, General Manager, BEST, agreed to ammend the budget, taking the total deficit to a whopping Rs 769.53 crore.

The undertaking’s losses in 2017-18 were 410 crore and the loss expected in the current year is around Rs 689 crore.

“Though the cash flow is in a bad state, we haven’t stopped development work. We will be taking steps for bettering the work environment for employees and facilities for passengers with our limited resources,” said Bagde, providing no clarity on when the pending diwali bonus will be paid. Committee members, across all parties, slammed the administration for its incompetence.
