Now, it is certain that Amar Sable, former journalist, scheduled caste leader and staunch Gopinath Munde supporter, will be the new BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Maharshtra. Since there is no other application for the Rajya Sabha seat vacated after Murli Deora passed away, announcement of Sable's election is merely a formality.

Names of BJP leader Shaina NC and Vijaya Rahatkar, national president of the party's women's wing, were also in the fray for the Rajya Sabha MP candidature, but Sable has prevailed. Interestingly, name of national vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe was doing the rounds, and Sable's choice has come as a surprise to many within the party.

It was Pankaja Munde along with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and state unit president Raosaheb Danve who insisted on Sable.

The latest inductions in the union cabinet, including Suresh Prabhu and Manohar Parrikar being upper caste, it was deliberately the choice of Sable. Another aspect if sources are to be believed is since BJP wants to increase its base in Western Maharashtra and since party has made Dilip Kamble who is a Matang community leader as Minister, party wanted a scheduled caste face in Rajya Sabha.

Speaking with dna over phone, Sable said he was happy to be chosen and has a feeling his work in the party has been rewarded. Sable is one of the scheduled caste leaders from the party who worked for years in Baramati, the bastion of NCP founder Sharad Pawar. He was in charge of the scheduled caste cell of the BJP for many years, before which he was state secretary of the cell. He also oversaw Gopinath Munde's campaigning for years.

Sable was born and brought up in Baramati, where he studied at Sanghvi Keshri College. He has completed a diploma course in journalism from the same college and worked as a Baramati correspondent for many Marathi dailies. He ran the weekly Kekavali from the district and edited it for 20 years.

Sources told dna that even though Sable's name has been announced, party vice-president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe would be elected to Rajya Sabha from the Madhya Pradesh quota in the next 3-4 months. Sahasrabuddhe is presently in charge of the central state and is a front-runner for being inducted into the union cabinet during the reshuffle after the budget session.
