In the intermittent night of September 23-24, the Central Railway (CR) successfully completed placing the girder for the all-connecting FOB at Thane railway station. To achieve it, the CR carried out a 6-hour mega block between Mulund and Kalwa. During this period, around eight train services were cancelled while seven others were partially cancelled or short terminated..

CR officials said that on Saturday night, more than 100 labourers were deployed on the tracks to launch the girders over platforms 2 and 3 next to Up lines (towards CSTM), and platform 5 next to Down line (towards Kalyan). "This will be a 6-metre wide FOB, connecting all platforms. During the block, 23-metres span of girder was launched," said Sunil Udasi, Chief PRO, Central Railway.

The second phase of work is expected to begin soon and is expected to carry into March 2018. The FOB, which will extend till platforms 9 and 10, is expected to ease the rush at the crowded station.

Thane is among the most crowded stations on CR that sees nearly 2 lakh daily commuters. Soon, the CR authorities are planning more services from Thane towards Karjat and Kasara. Thane connects both Main line and Trans-harbour line to Vashi, thus making it an important connecting station.
