Within 15 months all CCTV cameras will be installed in all suburban trains in Mumbai with a monitoring mechanism, says Goyal
At a meeting with the railways and government officials which started at 11 am and ended at 9 pm, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal asked both the Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR) to ensure that all the rakes are equipped with CCTVs irrespective of it being the general or women's compartment.
However, the security forces investigating the case said that the site where the stampede occurred is not fully covered by CCTVs, and images are unclear. "We are trying to search for people who caused panic by spreading rumours. However, there are certain issues with the position of CCTVs there," said a RPF officer.
In the last two days, the city police and railway police have come forth to collect as much information as possible. They are also talking to the victims who were injured during the stampede. Even the ticket counter on top of the FOB, too, has been inspected.
Meanwhile in a bid to improve safety, Piyush Goyal has announced CCTVs inside all local train coaches within the next 15 months. "Within 15 months all CCTV cameras will be installed in all suburban trains in Mumbai with a monitoring mechanism," said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.
The CCTVs will be installed in all the coaches including general and luggage. There are approximately 240 rakes of 12-car each which makes it 2,880 coaches on both Central and Western Railways together. This is the total strength of suburban trains that operate in Mumbai.
Since 2015 the WR and CR has been struggling to install CCTVs in the local trains. The plan was to install 22 CCTV cameras in each rake, which includes six cameras in each of the ladies coaches, two in the motorman's cabin and two in the guard's cabin, at a cost of Rs 15 lakh. However, sources said that with the entire rake being covered, the cost of this installation and set-up would go up.
According to sources, in the past, the authorities were unhappy with the quality of images generated by these CCTVs especially when the train travelled at high speeds.
