The practical marks of newly-introduced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) paper will be given by schools, while the theory part will be evaluated by the board's assigned teachers. Earlier, there was confusion among students regarding the marking pattern of the paper. However, the board had cleared all the confusions.

The answer sheet of the practical paper of ICT will be preserved at the examination for the next six months after which the school can destroy them. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MBSHSE) has addressed confusion of lakhs of students and made it clear that practical paper will be evaluated by the school where students will appear for the examination. "The examination centre will evaluate the practical paper of ICT and subsequently send marks to the board," said Laxmikant Pande, chairman of Mumbai division.

ICT was made a compulsory subject from the academic year 2013-14. The paper carries 50 marks, 10 for practicals and 40 for theory. But the final result will have only grades. "The board will add both theory and practical marks and convert them into grades," added Pande.

Earlier, the helpline number of Vashi board office of Mumbai division was flooded with queries from the board students who will write the ICT paper for the first time on March 24.

The subject has been introduced for the first time in class X syllabus and students as well as teachers do not know much about the pattern of questions to be asked in the examination.

While the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) exams are currently underway, students of School Secondary Certificate (SSC) examination have been dialing the helpline number frantically. "We were receiving a good number of calls from board students whose exam started on March 3," said Ashok Sarode, a counsellor at Vashi board office.

The ICT paper has been worrying students immensely as many of them are clueless about the marking pattern. "Most of the students were asking whether they would get marks or grades in the exam," said Sarode.

According to Sarode, most students were asking about the question pattern of ICT paper and how they can score well. "They have been asking whether the paper will be included in the best five and about the practical exam," said Sarode.

Since this examination will be conducted for the first time, the teachers were also apprehensive about how the paper would be evaluated. But the state education board has cleared that doubt. "I was scared about ICT paper as we did not have any idea about the questions that can be asked and the evaluation process. Now, I have no doubt," said Sangita Mhatre, a student.
