A nine-year-old girl was in the midst of being sexually assaulted by a youth in Goregaon (W) on Saturday night, when a bunch of alert locals heard her cries for help and rushed to save her. The 19-year-old youth, who works as a labourer, has been arrested and remanded to police custody.

According to the police, the girl, a class 4 student, was playing with her friends outside her residence in Bhagat Singh Nagar late on Saturday evening. According to the police, her parents were away.
The accused, Mahendra Yadav, suspected to be under the influence of alcohol, had been allegedly observing the girl for a long time. Knowing her parents were nowhere around, he approached the minor at around 8:30pm and told her that he wanted to take a walk with her.
An officer from Goregaon police station informed: "Although she initially hesitated, the girl eventually agreed when he lured her with chocolates. He took her to the isolated warehouse located down the road. Inside the compound, he began touching her inappropriately and tried to force himself onto her. The girl started crying and then screamed for help."
This alerted a few locals who were passing by, and upon entering the compound, they found the youth forcing himself on the girl. The locals swung into action, beat up Yadav, and dragged him to the police station immediately.
Although the girl does not remember seeing the accused before, Yadav told the police that he had been eyeing the girl for a long time whenever he visited his relative, who lives in the same area.
"While he does not have a past criminal record, we are inquiring with neighbours if he has misbehaved with other girls. He has been remanded to police custody," said Sunil Vadke, senior PI of Goregaon police.
Yadav has been arrested on charges of assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty and kidnapping under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, apart from relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
