Ever since a presentation on Modi's Make in India enthralled delegates in Germany, the phones of musician duo Ajay-Atul have been ringing off the hook. For, the brothers have given the background score for the presentation.

"We were surprised when the prime minister's office chose us. They have all the means to rope in people like A R Rahman," said Atul Gogavale, referring to their lack of formal training in music.

When the duo, who live in the city while their parents are settled in Pune, met representatives from the PMO, they first declined the offer. "We were so tied up that we said no. But they managed to convince us despite the little time we had in hand," said the 39-year-old Atul, elder of the two.

The music was prepared in flat 10 days. "Since it was a performance-based music, it had to be in rhythm with steps. It so happened that the person who was in charge of dance was also caught up with some other work. There were certain dances that we were not aware of and learned a few things about them to give music in tune with the steps," said Ajay.

Born into a family with modest means, the duo got drawn towards music from school days. They began taking part in bhajans, concerts and local bands. Both complimented each other by understanding and learning the nuances themselves.

In the process, the understanding of each other's liking and taste has grown so deep that they can produce music even when they are not together. "This time too, when I was in Mumbai, he was in Pune," said Atul.

"The brief from PMO was that the music should appeal to the global audience. So we used various classical instruments, apart from guitar and violin," added Atul.

The compliments are making up for all the hard work put in. Ajay said, "Everybody felt very proud. It was a memorable performance."
