Airlines pay Rs22.51 lakh as compensation in October

The month of October saw a compensation of Rs22.51 lakh from airline authorities due to cancellations, denial in boarding and delays in flights. Kingfisher Airlines compensated Rs10.05 lakh, while Jet Airways and Jetlite together compensated Rs8.9 lakh for denial in boarding and cancellations.

Refunds were given through re-booking of flights, providing hotel accommodation or refund through
money.

While a total of 726 passengers were denied boarding in the month of October leading to a compensation of Rs16.1 lakh, 4,786 passengers who got affected due to air cancellations were compensated a sum of Rs6.41 lakh. Other 27,635 passengers got compensations against refreshments and transfer to other flights.

A high-flying month
October has been a good month as far as airlines are concerned. Not only did it see a dip in the air snags but also a rise of about 7 lakh domestic passengers as compared to last month. The overall on-time performance of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of October has been 84.7%.

In terms of the on-time performance, Jetlite and Jet Airways stand ahead of their competitors Indigo, Kingfisher, Spicejet, NACIL and Go Air. Majorly, the reasons for delay have been reactionary apart from delays caused due to airport and government authorities, air traffic flow management, technical and weather changes.

The total domestic passengers carried by the scheduled airlines of India in the month of October were 46.17 lakh. It may be recalled that the total domestic passengers carried by the scheduled airlines of India in the month of September were 39.11 lakh.

Overall, passengers carried by domestic airlines from January to October registered a growth of 18.3%. It carried 419.34 lakh in 2010 as against 354.55 lakh in the corresponding period of the year 2009.
