Education department leaves aided schools out of the online admission process for seats reserved under RTE.
Adding to the confusion already surrounding the entry-level admission for the seats reserved under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, the education department has decided to leave out the aided school admissions from the online process.
Clarifying on Wednesday's decision of conducting admissions for all the reserved seats in the city online, education commissioner said, "The aided schools, depending on the grant they receive from the government, have to reserve more than 25% seats, which isn't the case in unaided schools. Hence, this year, we will conduct admissions online only for the schools that have to reserve 25% seats."
This means, this year, admissions will be online for only unaided non-minority schools.
Aided schools will have to conduct admissions at their own level. "The aided schools can conduct their own admissions like they have been doing, using the lottery system," said an official.
In a meeting on Wednesday, it was decided to extend the pilot of conducting RTE admissions online from south Mumbai to the entire city.
Demos will be conducted for BMC education inspectors from all zones and school principals from the south zone to acquaint them with the process of online registration of the schools. There will be 30 help desks to assist parents in the admission process.
The move has upset parents and RTE activists. "The department is only delaying the process, which is going to be the children's loss. Parents will now have to do double work. There is also no circular from the department and it is already mid-March, admissions in many schools are already done," said activist Avisha Kulkarni.
