The Special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court granted bail to a 52-year-old man, said to be an aide of gangster Santosh Shetty and arrested by the anti-extortion cell (AEC) of the Mumbai police in July 2014 in a kidnapping case. The bail was granted on a cash surety of Rs50,000.

Accused Anil Chander was arrested for his alleged role in the kidnapping of a city-based businessman and his son in Bangkok in 2012.

Advocate Rajesh Shrivastava, who appeared on behalf of Chander, said that the court granted him bail on the ground that the voice samples of the accused recorded by the complainant did not match with those recorded recently by the investigating agency. "The incident took place in Bangkok and, apart from the complainant, there was no eyewitness to the whole thing. Thus, the court granted him bail," he added.

According to AEC officers, in January 2012, on the complaint of a businessman, they had filed a case of kidnapping and extortion. The businessman and his son had said that they had met two people for a lower rate of interest on a huge loan amount for their business. According to the investigating agency, the two were called to Bangkok for the meeting to release the loan amount and documentation. They visited Bangkok twice and, on the third occasion, were allegedly confined to a house and mercilessly beaten up by Shetty, alias Nick Sharma, and his associates.

Shetty had allegedly demanded Rs15 crore from the family for their release, but the complainant could not arrange for that big an amount. He had said he could pay Rs5 crore. The complainant had then pleaded with the gangster and his associates and convinced them to release them on the condition that the amount would be paid soon after the release.

On reaching Mumbai, the complainant approached the police and lodged a complaint. Shetty and his associate Rajesh Chaturani alias Raju Sindhi were arrested in March 2012; Chander's role was revealed later on. When he arrived in Delhi from Bangkok, he was detained by immigration officials based on the lookout notice issued against him by the AEC and then handed over to the Mumbai police.
