Even though nine independent MLAs from various parts of Maharashtra have recently joined NCP, Jalgaon MLA Sanjay Savkare and Murbad MLA Kisan Kathore, on Monday, in a rather surprising move, joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), ahead of Maharashtra assembly polls,.

Savkare, who is agriculture minister and Kathore joined BJP in presence of Eknath Khadse in Mumbai.

Savkare's entry into BJP is considered as a major blow to NCP in Khadesh region of Maharashtra. On the other hand, Kathore, who had left the party last month, stating, “I have contested assembly two times. Now, the new leadership is emerging in the party and they should also get a chance, so I am resigning from NCP and clearing the way."

I decided to quit NCP because of local issues in my constituency. My supporters were angry over certain things and wanted me to join BJP. I was also noticing that another NCP leader in my region was being promoted by the party leadership and I was being marginalised," Savkare said.

It must be noted that a non-cognizable offence has been registered against Kathore for submitting false affidavits while filling nomination forms during 2004 assembly election. The case against him was registered against him after the Supreme Court ordered the election department. Existing MLA's and senior party leader leaving party to join BJP has worried NCP as the elections are just three weeks away.

Last month, within a span of a week, former Maharashtra Medical Education Minister Vijay Kumar Gavit, who was expelled from the NCP and Tribal Development Minister Babanrao Pachput had joined BJP. While, former Union minister and NCP leader Suryakanta Patil from Hingoli in Marathwada and labour leader Vijay Kamble have also joined BJP.
