Students pursuing Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Mumbai University's (MU) Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Contemporary Studies staged a protest on Thursday disrupting the varsity's convocation procession as it reached the venue's entrance.

The protesting students hoped to catch the attention of the varsity's administration over some of their long-pending grievances which include the delay in getting their mark sheets, shortage of teachers and the lack of a permanent director at the Centre.

"Even after appearing for three semesters, the university has still not issued mark sheets to us. We are about to appear for our finals now and are worried that this would come in the way our careers. Also, the Centre currently has no teachers for two major subjects — Disaster Management and NGO Management. We do not have a permanent director at the moment either. Despite several complaints, the university has not given us any relief," said Dhiren, one of the students.

The students dispersed from the protest site long after the convocation ended on Thursday afternoon.

"Three new professors have been appointed for the Centre on February 20 and the process of appointing a director will start soon. Meanwhile, the board of examinations will resolve the issue of pending mark sheets soon," said an official response from the varsity.
