Taking serious cognizance of the incident wherein the Maharahshtra Medical Council (MMC) suspended two doctors for three months for putting up advertisements, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has decided to educate its 2.5 lakh members on the code of ethics that governs them.

The association will send directives to the members on what is allowed and what is a clear violation of medical ethics under the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.

dna had first reported on March 25 on how the MMC suspended the two errant doctors. After the report, the local and national gynaecology bodies decided to stand by the council's decision, saying patients were not a commodity and cannot be enticed with money-back schemes.

As per the Indian Medical Council regulations, doctors cannot solicit patients directly or indirectly. No doctor can make high claims about any procedure. The Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 prohibits advertisement of drugs and remedies that claim to have magical properties.

According to the MMC, the suspended doctors provided infertility treatment and claimed guaranteed treatment or an offer to return the money to patients.

IMA national president Dr SS Agarwal and Padma Shri awardee Dr KK Aggarwal, in a joint statement, said, "The IMA is committed to making the medical system in our country transparent and efficient. We urge the entire medical fraternity to abide by the MCI regulations and be cautious about anything being released by others in their name."
