The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) announced its plans to build a 30-acre park on the banks of the now polluted Waldhuni river which originates from Ulhasnagar and passes through Kalyan.

"The park will be built adjacent to Waldhuni river and a lot of green area has been planned. We will plant trees to reduce pollution and there will be lots of plantations to maintain the ecological balance," said Pramod Kulkarni, city engineer, KDMC.

Some features of the proposed park include an open auditorium, ampitheater, jogging tracks, shopping area and a laser show. There will also be a play area for children, food plaza and lawn to hold functions and open-air gatherings.

"The idea behind this Citypark came to us when we did a survey and asked residents what they would like to have in a smart city. Majority of them pointed out the lack of a recreation center," added Kulkarni.

The park will be built at a cost of Rs 110 crore out of which Rs 70 crore have been ear marked for landscaping and construction of amenities. The remaining amount will be spent on equipment, smart lighting and digital surveillance to maintain the park.

"We have invited tenders and if all goes well then the work is likely to begin from May 1," said Kulkarni.
