Mumbaikars were taken in by a pleasant surprise on Tuesday, when they witnessed one of the largest clean-up drives in recent times. The BMC had already planned to carry out the Swachcha Bharat Abhiyaan on Tuesday, and later decided to collaborate with various citizens groups and ALMs, volunteers from the Haryana-based spiritual group, Dera Sacha Sauda Sirsa.

Jason Fernandes, a Santa Cruz-based activist, said, "Post diwali, such a drive was needed because toxic remains of firecrackers and other garbage were strewn on the roads by people," he said.

Fernandes believes that it would have been better if the drive was carried out on a Sunday. "A lot more people could have participated as compared to a weekday," he added.

Matunga-based activist Nikhil Desai, was happy by the extensive drive carried out by the Haryana-based group and the BMC. "Dera Sacha Sauda members did an excellent job of cleaning the roads and footpaths of my ward.

The Five Garden area, the Hindu Colony and areas near my house at King's Circle were cleaned well. I have written to the municipal commissioner to bring them again to the city at BMC's expense. This will help Mumbai the most," Desai said.
