There's good news in the offing for patients visiting TMC's Kalwa hospital. By February, a chemist shop will open up inside the hospital, providing the much-needed relief to patients and doctors.

Lack of a chemist shop inside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hospital has been a reason for grief for both patients and doctors. "From the beginning of next month we will have a chemist shop in the premises of Kalwa hospital," said Choity Mitra, dean of the hospital.

The contract has been given to DY Patil hospital medical store to set-up the chemist store. The rent will be around Rs14 lakh per month. After almost four years, a drug store will be operational at the hospital.

"This is great news as till date patients had been suffering a lot to get a prescribed, especially during night hours," says a resident doctor, adding, "They have to travel either to Kalwa naka, Thane station or Jupiter hospital near Eastern Express Highway to get medicines. If they were unable to find one, they used to fight with us."

In one such incident, things took a violent turn last month when a resident doctor was beaten up by an irate relative. The patient had come to the hospital with high fever and the doctor asked him to get a syringe which was not available with the hospital. It was 4am and the patient roamed around for an hour trying to get the syringe but he could not find any. So, the patient roughed up the doctor in a fit of rage.

Rakesh Pednekar, a resident of Kalwa, says, "Opening of a chemist shop at the hospital is a good news as we do not have to go hunting for the medicines elsewhere."
