Sitting on his bed in the BMC-run Nair Hospital, 23-year old Nabil Ahmed winces in pain. “Soon after we had our meals, I started feeling uneasy. My body was aching. The next day, I vomitted twice and started feeling suffocated,” said Ahmed, who is part of a group of 28 boys studying in a religious seminary at Bhiwandi who suffered from food poisoning after eating at a religious event.

Tariq Farooqui, a Congress leader and vice-president of the Darul Uloom Diwanshah, said on Tuesday noon, 30 children from the madrasa had gone to a religious function where they ate pulao at the ‘Daawat.’

“Soon after, they started feeling uneasy and some began throwing up, experiencing diarrhea and started trembling we summoned a team of over 10 doctors but around six to seven of the boys started feeling uncomfortable the next day too,” said Maulana Shaikh Akthar from the madrassa management. 

Dr Ramesh Bharmal, Dean of the hospital, said the condition of the children was stable.
