At quarter past eight in the night on Thursday, when Raj Thackeray emerged from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Ballard Estate, he seemed exhausted. He had spent eight-and-a-half hours being grilled by the investigators probing alleged irregularities related to Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) dealings.

Once back home, he told the media: "They may institute as many enquiries as they like, but I will not stop speaking."

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief had entered the office around 11.25 am, following the agency's summons to Thackeray on Sunday in connection with its investigation into the money laundering case involving IL&FS group.

Thackeray was one of the founding partners at Kohinoor CTNL, one of the defaulters of IL&FS, which made a loan and equity investment of Rs 860 crore in it.

Sources in the know told DNA that the agency had a 35-point questionnaire ready for the MNS chief, to help map the financial transactions that took place.

Sources in the ED said Thackeray was quizzed on the shareholding pattern, the reason behind forming the consortium, his decision to exit it, and the investments.

He was confronted with statements given by Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi's son Unmesh Joshi and Rajan Shirodkar, both erstwhile partners in Kohinoor CTNL, the company raising Kohinoor Square towers at Dadar.

One reason Raj cited for exiting the consortium was that he was busy forming his party MNS at the time.

He was allowed to go after his statement was recorded.

The MNS leader did not field queries from waiting media personnel, greeting them with folded hands before getting into his car and driving off to his Shivaji Park residence.

The ED officers, who came out with Thackeray, said he had not been called for questioning again on Friday.

The agency had earlier summoned Unmesh Joshi and Thackeray's friend and former business associate Rajan Shirodkar.

While Raj was being questioned by ED sleuths, his family members were lodged at a nearby hotel. The Mumbai police maintained a heavy presence in the vicinity, which was besieged by a strong media contingent.

The police also detained MNS general secretary Sandeep Deshpande, who was taken into custody for wearing a black T-shirt with the slogan 'EDiot Hitler' and a Nazi emblem on it, in an obvious swipe at the Narendra Modi-led regime.

The ED is currently engaged in the investigation of IL&FS loan and equity investment of Rs 860 crore in Kohinoor CTNL, which is one of the defaulters.

Kohinoor CTNL, which was promoted by Unmesh Joshi, son of former chief minister and veteran Sena leader Manohar Joshi, is developing Kohinoor Square towers just opposite Shiv Sena headquarters at Dadar in north central Mumbai.

Thackeray and Unmesh Joshi had jointly bid for some assets after creating a consortium, but later the MNS chief quit.

The ED reportedly wanted to question Thackeray on his exit from the group.

Names of Raj Thackeray and Unmesh Joshi are believed to have come up during ED's ongoing probe into IL&FS case. The investigation concerns IL&FS' investment and shareholding in Kohinoor building in which Thackeray along with Rajan Shirodkar and Unmesh Joshi made a deal of Rs 421 crore.

The deal took place before the economic slowdown of 2007.
