After the the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday announced that it will evacuate in 10 days patients from Bhagwati hospital in  Borivli and move them to Shatabdi hospital, the civic corporation on Saturday declared to vacate BYL Nair hospital’s staff quarters and Bhajekar hospital.  Built in 1958, Bhajekar hospital is located in the premises of Nair hospital and is not in use.

Confirming the decision, additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “The Bhajekar hospital is not in use and only three tenants stay there. We, however, do not want to take chances and will evacuate.”

The Nair hospital staff quarters at Mahalaxmi currently is occupied by 36 families. Notices have been issued to the families. The D-ward officials of the BMC are trying to find an alternate space to shift  families from Nair hospital quarters. Bhajekar hospital tenants have been told to move to Ghatkopar.

Mhaiskar reiterated that the civic body has launched a full-fledged audit of buildings where health-care is being provided. “Most of our buildings are over 30-years-old. All the medical superintendents, deans, heads of the departments and medical health officials have been asked to carry out necessary process to conduct structural audits,” she said.

The civic body has circulated a list of 12 structural auditors, who have roped in to know check the conditions of municipal buildings, including hospitals. The list of auditors registered with the BMC is set to be increased up to 30. The auditors are asked to a submit report stating if the buildings require to be repaired, demolished or evacuated. “If you see, a private consultant’s audit report of the Dockyard building that collapsed last week, it was vague and did not specify that the structure required to be evacuated. Hence, we have instructed auditors to be specific,” another civic official said.
