After the arrest of six people including a student and another employee of the Mumbai University by the Ratnagiri Police, the investigation in the fake marksheet scam operated within the university has revealed that the police might nab a few more people in the case. Those arrested by the Ratnagiri Police have been identified as Suyash Shetye, who is a mechanical engineering student along with data entry operators of the university Gorakhnath Gaikwad and Mahesh Bagwe, officer Pravin Warik,  and clerks Ganesh Mungekar and Dinesh Haldankar.

The police suspects that the scam is operated by officials working inside the university campus either as permanent or freelance employees and such a sensitive matter of goofing up marksheets by putting fake marks after accepting hefty charges from students cannot be a task executed by six people alone.

After further investigation, the Ratnagiri Police shall send a police team to Kalina campus to probe how the insiders are making fake certificates, documents and marksheets. While the police is trying to get a breakthrough to crack the entire modus operandi behind the scam, the police suspects involvement of more number of permanent employees.

“Other than the student, other five arrested are directly or indirectly related to the university and two of them have a criminal background and cases have been registered against them at the BKC Police Station for granting pass marks to students illegally. At present, a case has been registered under section 420, 467, 468, 470, 471 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and all of them have been sent to police custody.” said Superintendent of Police, Ratnagiri rural, Pravin Mundhe.

Shetye had taken admission at Finolex college situated at Ratnagiri in 2015. After passing the first year, Shetye found it extremely difficult to get done with the second semester due to shortage of required marks.

At first, he put his answer sheets for re-evaluation in the university and subsequently, he also contacted the Kalina branch to arrange a fake marksheet in exchange of a huge amount of money. With the help of the arrested accused, he got a clear signal for passing and when he submitted his marksheet to his college, the administration found something fishy and further probe led to the exposure of the scam behind. It is then that the entire scam came into the open.
