Jia Dhalguj (9) finally got admission in Kalina-based Mary Immaculate Girls' High School, where she started attending the classes on Friday. Her parents, who work as janitors in corporate offices, had to struggle for three years to get her admission in a decent English-medium school in the city.

dna was the first to report how the parents could not get admission for their daughter in an English-medium school, despite media professional Vaibhav Vishal coming to their aid.

Allegedly, for three years, none of the English-medium schools around the Vakola–Kalina area entertained the parents. This year, the mother shared her problem with Vishal, who worked in the same office where she was a janitor.

"We hoped that Vishal sir would help us. We thought as we were uneducated ourselves, we did not know how to approach schools," said Karamjeet Dhaljguj, Jia's father. They thought getting admission for Jia would be easier after Vishal gets involved. But almost every school they approached since December 2015 gave them a negative response. Frustrated, Vishal then sent a tweet to the state education minister early this month. There was no communication from the minister's side.

After dna reported the incident, many followed it up, including member of parliament (MP) Poonam Mahajan. She even met Vishal to discuss the problem."She did not promise us admission and said she would not be doing any 'shifarish'. We short-listed schools and her team approached them," informed Vishal.

Admission forms and interview requests were sent across to a lot of schools. The first school they approached denied them a seat. Not losing hope, they continued sending out applications. Mary Immaculate Girls' High School in Kalina then agreed to give Jia admission in Std III.

Describing her first day at the school, Jia said, "I want to thank all the people who helped Vishal uncle. On my first day in school, teachers gave me chocolates and everyone was kind to me. I am going to become a doctor."

The story of the young girl sets a perfect example of the impact social media can have these days – a single tweet from Vishal turned the issue into a mini-movement.
