After almost a decade, the Western Railway have finally started work at Bandra terminus end for laying the fifth line. The line meant for running long distance trains, was missing between Santacruz and Mahim. This will give more path for running suburban local trains thus providing possibility of operating more services in future and also improve speed.
Senior railway officials said that they have begun work on the fifth and sixth line especially near Bandra terminus end. It has been nearly two months that this initial work has started where they shall be laying tracks and overhead wires. These would be connected to Bandra terminus too which will segregate long distance trains from both Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus.
AK Gupta, General Manager, Western Railway said, "We have started work recently. There are over 650 encroachments that need to be removed for the sixth line. If all goes well then we can ready the additional lines in next two-three years".
The Western Railway authorities had earlier spent Rs 10 crore to connect this fifth line. However the locals at Bandra objected as it was coming on their path to a cemetery. The WR officials claim that they had offered several alternative pathways for the cemetery but then nothing worked and so this became a loss of public money. Even the local politicians intervention didn't make much difference. And so this fifth line is being relinked.
This is part of Rs 918 crore 5th-6th rail lines that is part of Mumbai Urban Transport Project. According to railway officials, about Rs 140 crore has so far been spent on the sixth line project. The major hurdle is land acquisition and rehabilitation of people.
The sixth line will give WR a corrdior--that is two lines-- to run long-distance trains. Currently, WR has a fifth line between Mumbai Central to Borivali but with a part missing between Mahim and Santacruz. This fifth line is presently being used to operate over few local trains between Andheri and Virar stations.
