A 48-year old man was arrested on Sunday morning for allegedly raping a 32-year-old in his room of a five-star hotel in Worli on Saturday.

The accused Rajesh Ganesh Iyer, a native of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, who runs an advertising agency, had called the woman to the hotel to return some money that he had borrowed from her, according to the police.

The woman, a widow who is a resident of Andheri, runs a boutique in the western suburbs.

The police said that Iyer, who had arrived in the Mumbai about a month ago, was under the influence of alcohol at the time that the alleged sexual assault took place. Iyer, added the police, had come into contact with the woman during his sojourn in the city.

Iyer, said a police official, also tried to assault a police officer while he was being interrogated at the police station on Sunday.

An officer from Worli police station said that Iyer had borrowed Rs30,000 from the woman a few days ago. “A few days later, Iyer handed over a cheque for Rs30,000 to the woman but the cheque he had given her bounced when she deposited it in her bank account,” said the police officer.

The woman then called up Iyer and insisted that he immediately repay the amount in cash. Iyer had called her to his hotel room to collect the payment. “When she reached there, Iyer raped her and warned her against complaining to the police,” said the officer.

The woman, however, went to Worli police station where she lodged a complaint against Iyer who was picked up from the hotel by the police and placed under arrest.

The woman was taken to the police hospital at Nagpada for a medical examination. A medical test will also be conducted on Iyer.

The police have registered a case under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code which allows arrest for rape. Iyer has also been charged with assaulting a public servant on duty. He is supposed to be produced in a metropolitan magistrate’s court shortly, said the police.
