A 25-year-old advertising professional fell victim to the high-handedness of a VIP convoy on Wednesday evening, when he was riding his motorcycle towards Santa Cruz (East). The victim, Somaya Nanjappa was riding on the Kala Nagar Bridge on the Western Express Highway around 7.30pm in heavy traffic, when about a convoy of 20 cars, belonging to the US embassy, was escorting a VIP vehicle to the airport.

According to Nanjappa, one of the convoy vehicles, a blue and white Bolero (police vehicle) with registration number MH 01 BA 4107, rammed into his bike from behind. "I was driving slow when the car hit me. I nearly fell off the bridge, but managed to control my bike just in time. The rear view mirror and indicators broke due to the impact and my leg got injured," said Nanjappa.

However, he added, instead of apologising, the driver started hurling abuses at him and throwing his weight around. The driver then drove away like it was my fault, Nanjappa said.

He followed the convoy to the VIP entrance of the airport in Kalina and confronted the driver. "His name is Uday Chougule and he is a constable driver. He was not in the least bit apologetic... It is sad when the life of ordinary citizens is at stake because of VIP vehicles. And it's worse when officials are not bothered," added Nanjappa.

He said he approached the Vakola police after the incident, but they asked him to approach another police station. "I was asked to go to another police station as the offence did not fall under the jurisdiction of the Vakola police. However, the officer I spoke to promised to look into the matter internally as it involved a police vehicle," said Nanjappa.

When contacted, the Vakola police said they cannot do much as the offence should be registered with the Kherwadi police.
