The decision of the Maharashtra government to hand over the additional charge of joint commissioner of police (crime), an inspector general (IG) rank post recently vacated by Sadanand Date, to an additional commissioner of police, a deputy IG rank officer, has created a lot of heartburn in the hierarchy-conscious Mumbai Police.
Ever since the news of Date being cleared for central deputation came in, speculations had been rife about which officers were in the race for the coveted post. Even though the government is yet to make an official announcement on who the next joint CP would be, the move to hand over Date's charge to an additional CP has raised several eyebrows. "Generally an officer of IG or special IG rank is handed over such additional charge. It is only on rare occasions that a junior officer is asked to shoulder such responsibility," said a police officer.
The move created ripples in the force, because there are already three joint CPs in the city who could have been given the additional charge till a formal posting is made. There are four joint CP posts in Mumbai – joint CP (crime), joint CP (law and order), joint CP (administration) and joint CP (traffic).
According to sources, the state home department reportedly played a major role in the decision to hand over the charge to a junior officer and not to any of the joint CPs.
When contacted, Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria denied any role played by the home department. "Normally, the charge is given to joint CP (administration). However, the Maharashtra police games are going to be held from February 22 and, therefore, these officers (joint CPs) have lots of work at hand," Maria said.
