To save the trees in Aarey Milk Colony from being axed, activists and NGOs from across the city have come forward to extend their support to the cause.

In this regard, Leena Prabhoo, chairperson of the NGO, Improving Quality of Life in Mumbai Suburbs (IQOLIMS), along with environmental activists Rishi Agarwal, Biju Augustine and Stalin Dayanand had a meeting with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on February 24.

During the meeting, the activists proposed an alternative site to construct the Metro lll yard to preserve the greenery in Aarey Colony. Leena Prabhoo, who joined the movement two months ago, talking to iamin said, "The government has already started construction work for Metro lll yard within the Aarey Colony premises. This is the only large stretch of greenery left within the city and we cannot afford to lose it for the sake of infrastructural development. On one hand, the Prime Minister talks about reducing carbon footprint in the country and on other, the state government has permitted the felling of around 3,000 trees which are over 50 years old. We have requested the Chief Minister to look into the matter and have proposed Mumbai Port Trust land as an alternative site for building the Metro lll yard.”

Fadnavis responded to the activists’ plea by asking them for some time to closely understand the issue. However, he has not yet made any commitment to stall the on-going construction work in the colony premises.

Prabhoo, has also written a mail to the municipal commissioner, Sitaram Kunte, asking him about the steps that the civic body has implemented to prevent encroachment on Aarey colony land.
