While the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) of Pimpri has allowed the Pune-based Rambo circus to take custody of its 22 ailing animals, the animal rights activists seem to be in no mood to give up. They have now made public these animals' health assessment reports, prepared by veterinarians of the Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), which detail the suffering each animal went through.

On May 26, the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) along with the local police had seized 22 animals, including four elephants, from the Rambo circus after receiving several complaints from animal protection organisations, which alleged that these circus animals were not only neglected but also tortured.

The medical report of horses listed swollen joints and tendons, wounds on various parts of their bodies, injuries on tongues and corners of mouths, foot infections, abnormal hoof shape and poor hoof-horn quality. The prognosis report of all four horses mentioned that they were unfit for any kind of work.

The medical test report of dogs pointed out that they suffered from neglect, severe tick and flea infestations, untreated fractures and overgrown nails. The dogs were also fearful of humans as a result of the treatment meted out to them in the circus. "After examining these dogs, I am of the opinion that they were not cared for," wrote Dr Shinde in his report.

The medical report of the elephants suggested that they suffered from psychological deterioration as a result of prolonged and severe confinement, and stress because of the abusive training. The four pachyderms also suffered from visual impairment, swollen joints, gangrene of the tail, infected internal ears, torn ear pinnas from use of sharp torture devices, foot rot, cracked nails, and obesity because of being chained in one place for as long as 22 hours a day.

The four horses, 14 dogs of the Pomeranian breed and the four elephants were examined by the livestock development officer of the District Veterinary Polyclinics.

In a statement, Manilal Valliyate, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) India director of veterinary affairs, said, "Rambo circus condemns animals to chronic confinement and deprivation of everything that is natural and important to them when it forces them to perform for human amusement. We will explore all legal remedies to ensure that the animals are rescued again and live free from suffering. PETA urges families to stay far away from any facility that abuses animals for entertainment."

Meanwhile, people associated with the circus claimed that "it's a nice way of asking for donations from people across the globe, but these NGOs never formulated any rules, so that the animals are taken care of at the circus itself".
