As the death of farmer Dharma Patil rocked the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the Chief Secretary will conduct an inquiry and submit a report during the next meeting. Fadnavis assured his colleagues that no officer would be spared if found guilty of not compensating Patil for his land.

Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar informed mediapersons that Fadnavis had ordered a probe into Patil’s death and related issues. Mungantiwar also said the state government has taken this issue seriously and no one would be spared.

Criticizing the Opposition for their comments over Patil’s death, Mungantiwar said, “Such deaths should not be repeated and the government would welcome any suggestions in this regard, but doing politics over the death was uncalled for.”

Mungantiwar said the government was committed to providing all possible compensation within the limits of the established norms and rules. He said the state believes in the ideology of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and is determined to prevent such incidents in future. He also urged alliance partner Shiv Sena to present its views within Cabinet instead of making it public.

It was after Fadnavis assured the deceased farmer’s son, Narendra Patil, that action would be taken against concerned officials that the former agreed to take custody of his father’s body from J J Hospital.

Minister for water resources Girish Mahajan had facilitated conversation between Narendra Patil and Fadnavis over phone from J J Hospital on Monday.
