On her way to the hospital with grievous injuries to an eye, the thought of the safety of her jilted lover’s old flame played on Aryanka Hosbetkar’s mind.
Minutes before on Wednesday, the 26-year-old Worli resident had been attacked with a scalding chemical by her ex-boyfriend, Jerrit G John, who didn’t take too well to her decision to call it quits. She asked her friends to warn one of the women, who John was allegedly dating while he and Hosbetkar were in a relationship and who also spurned him, that he could come after her next. Her fears were justified; around two hours after he attacked Hosbetkar, John went to his other former girlfriend’s house armed with a similar bottle of the chemical. But the warning saved her; she refused to open the door.
“Just as she had suspected that the man was planning some mischief after their argument the night before the attack, which made her ask a couple of friends to stay with her, Hosbetkar realised the threat the other woman faced. So, while being admitted, she constantly told her friends to get in touch with the other woman,” said a source.
Playing the role of the messengers to the tee, the friends passed on the warning to the woman. She was roused from her sleep around 6.30am, an hour-and-a-half after the attack on Hosbetkar, by a phone call from the friends asking her not to answer the bell if John landed at the door.
“When the doorbell rang at 7am, she looked out through the security camera and found John with a bottle in his hand, just as Hosbetkar’s friends had warned. She refused to open the door and left him screaming outside,” said the source.
About three months ago, Hosbetkar stumbled upon proof on John’s laptop of him cheating on her with another woman from the suburbs. He reportedly even had separate folders to store the mails he received from each. Hosbetkar later got in with touch her and the two decided to break it off with John. “He could not accept the fact that both had broken up with him. He even asked them if they didn’t feel guilty about making his life miserable,” said the source.
