A month after an 18-year-old boy was arrested for sexually assaulting a six-month-old girl, odontology forensic report said the multiple bite marks on the child’s body were of the accused’s sister.

An expert from KEM Hospital submitted the report to police on Saturday, which has now given a fresh turn to the investigation. The police had earlier suspected that the bite marks were of the accused.

Following the report, the boy was released from Dongri home on Monday after his parents gave an undertaking to produce him in police station whenever needed.

On January 7, the child, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Govandi, was at her neighbour’s home. When the grandmother brought her back, she found bite marks on her body. She alleged that the child had been raped by the boy. The girl had three prominent bite marks on her chest, cheek and right elbow. The forensic department of KEM Hospital had taken the teeth impression of the accused and his sister after contradictory statements. Sources from the forensic department confirmed that the bite mark found on the child’s body matched the teeth pattern of the accused’s 12-year-old sister, who had said that she had bitten the child as she couldn’t tolerate her crying.

The police are taking a legal opinion on whether to file a summary report or a charge sheet.

The boy, his mother and younger sister – who are ragpickers – live in a rented room in a Mhada building.  The accused has been booked under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sections 4 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Radheshyam Agarwal, senior police station, Shivaji Nagar police station said, “The boy has been released by the juvenile court and the family has left for their native place. We had booked the boy as per the girl’s family’s statement.”

He added that they would take action against the 12-year-old girl only if the baby girl’s family insist.

Incident shocked the neighbourhood
The victim and the accused are neighbours. The accused’s sister took the baby to her house so she could play with her. However, when the baby had not been returned even an hour later, her anxious grandmother went to the house.  After she brought the baby back home, she found several bite marks all over the baby’s body.
