Accused escapes from police custody outside Arthur Road prison in Mumbai

Satish Mane, an accused in a robbery case, managed to escape from outside the premises of Arthur Road prison at Lower Parel on Friday.

Confirming it, Sudhakar Gharge, senior police inspector at NM Joshi Marg police station said they have registered a case against Satish Mane and a man hunt has been launched to nab him. All the police stations across the city have been alerted.

Mane and his three associates who were arrested by the DN Nagar police were reproduced before the court on Friday after completing their police remand till July 12. The court ordered the police to remand them to judicial custody. They were brought to Arthur Road prison in a police van.

After the police van arrived outside the jail while alighting from the van, Mane managed to escape. The policemen escorting him and other accused lodged a complaint at NM Joshi Marg police station. Sources said Mane, 21, along with his three associates- Sunil Lanjhewar (19), Swapnil Sonawane (23) and Nirmal Ikke (19), all residents of Chandrapur were arrested on Tuesday while they were trying to sell the stolen booty in four bungalows at Andheri (West).

The accused robbed ornaments on June 27 after assaulting a jeweller in Brahmapuri tehsil at Chandrapur. After their arrest they were produced before the magistrate’s court on Wednesday and were remanded to police custody till July 12.
